Amazon Roller Skates: Selecting Beginner Roller Skates on Any Budget

Amazon roller skates: Amazon ope box with a yellow Roller skate placed on top

Are you considering buying Amazon roller skates, but not sure where to begin? No matter whether you're a total beginner or a returning older skater discovering your skate flow after 2 or 3 decades out, Amazon can be a surprisingly handy one-stop shop for putting together your skate starter kit. As an Amazon associate, I earn from qualifying purchases, but I’ll recommend items I feel are fit for purpose. In this guide, I’ll walk through what to look for when considering your starter roller skating kit. I’ll help you to make smart choices based on your budget and long-term skate goals.

Why Shop for Roller Skates on Amazon UK?

Amazon offers a wide selection of roller skates and accessories, all with the added benefits of convenience, competitive pricing, and fast delivery. If you're an Amazon Prime member, you can often get next-day or even same-day delivery—ideal when you're keen to hit the rink or the pavement ASAP. Many products also offer Click & Collect, allowing you to pick up your gear from a local point when it suits you.

Beyond convenience, Amazon provides:

✅ User reviews to help you compare products

✅ Easy returns if something doesn’t quite fit

Let's look at a small selection of roller skates that start at a low price point, before looking through the mid and slightly higher-priced options. Note that all of these selections come with fairly soft wheels and therefore offer optimum grippyness for complete beginners. Wheels can easily be swapped out further down the line [to better match surface choices, skating style and improving skills].

Entry Level Cloth skates: Test the Waters Affordably

If you're just starting out and not quite sure whether skating is going to be a long-term love affair or a short-lived flirtation, entry-level cloth skates are a smart, budget-friendly choice.

These skates usually feature softer boots with lots of cushioning, making them comfy for short sessions and easy rolling. They’re great for indoor skating or smooth surfaces, though they may lack the support needed for long skating sessions or executing more advanced skating moves down the line.

Perfect for:

✅ Total beginners

✅ Those unsure if they’ll stick with skating

Osprey Roller Skates: Has a breathable fly knit boot in a psychedelic mid-top boot design, mounted on a plastic skate plate. They don’t have much of a heel, but they’ll do the job for basic roller skating fun.

🚦Lower Price Range

Roces Kolossal Roller Skates: Has a faux leather boot, PVC sold mounted on a polypropylene plate. Not a bad entry-level skate, although not very durable over the long term. Comes in black or black, red and yellow. The boot is mounted on a plastic/polypropylene composite plate. They don’t have much of a heel [so could take some adjusting to if you eventually decide to upgrade to a higher-end boot with a slightly more raised heel].

🚦Lower Price Range

Roces Model Disco Palace Roller Skates:  Has a faux leather boot, PVC sold mounted on a plastic/polypropylene composite plate. Not a bad entry-level skate, although not very durable over the long term. Comes in black or black, red and yellow. The boot is mounted on a plastic/polypropylene composite plate. They also don’t have much of a heel [so could take some adjusting to if you eventually decide to upgrade to a higher-end boot with a slightly more raised heel].

🚦Lower Price Range

Leather, Suede or Faux Leather Boots: Support Your Long Term Progress

If you’re already enjoying your skating sessions—or you just know you’re all in—investing in a sturdier pair of skates with a leather, suede, or vegan leather boot is a great step to take. These boots offer better ankle support, durability, and a good bit more responsive skating experience.

They're typically a bit higher in price but will last that much longer and help you progress your skills with more confidence down the line. The firmness and fit of these artistic-style roller skates are great for rhythm and jam skating.

Perfect for:

✅ Skaters ready to skate regularly or for relatively long periods.

✅ Those who plan to skate for the medium or longer term.

Classic Roller Skates: Has a black leather boot mounted on a plastic plate. My mum recently re-started skating in a pair of these skates, and found them to have a nice wide fit - all she needed to enjoy a comfortable rolling experience.

🚦Lower Price Range

Rio Roller Skates: Leather ankle boot, mounted on a plastic/nylon plaste. Comes a cream or black. A well-known [and well-used] entry-level skate. They’re more than enough to get you started as you learn to skate.

🚦Lower Price Range

Roces RC1 Classic Roller Skates: Made from soft, synthetic suede leather, mounted on a durable plastic/polypropylene composite plate. These are also a very good entry-level skate.

🚦Lower Price Range

Moxi - Bach Bunny - Roller Skates: Moxi durable vinyl ankle boot roller skates with a custom Moxi Dri-Lex lining material, mounted on a Marvel aluminium plate with strong metal trucks providing optimal [and long-lasting] support. Comes in a range of vibrant colours. Riedelle is one of the foremost brand leaders.

🚦Mid-higher Price Range

Sure-Grip Broadwalk Roller Skates: A suede leather ankle boot mounted on a set of aluminium plates for a solid finish. A well-known brand within our skate community.

🚦Mid-higher Price Range

Riedelle - Crew - Roller Skates: A durable thermoplastic polyurethane ankle boot mounted on a Powerdyne Thrust Nylon Plate [they’re not metal but at the upper end of the Nylon plate range]. Comes in 3 fun contrasting colours, including crimson, Ocean and tumeric. Riedelle is one of the foremost brand leaders.

🚦Higher Price Range

Roller Hockey Style Boots: For the Nostalgic Comeback skater

If you’re making a comeback and remember the days of roller hockey boots or ice skate conversions, these solid boot styles might be just what you’re looking for. Known for their rigid ankle support and sleek design, these skates often feel familiar to those who skated in the 80s or 90s.

They’re also a great choice for those who like a tougher aesthetic and skate with a bit more power. While a little heavier, the extra stability can be a huge confidence booster. These hockey-style boots are a popular choice among street skaters. They’re less ideal for rhythm and jam skating styles as they can be a bit heavy and clunky when trying to fit your dance flow.

Perfect for:

✅ Fans of that old-school look and feel

✅ Those like the wider fit [so their toes can move freely].

Ventro Pro Roller Skates: Black hard moulded polyurethane roller hockey style boot [made for an aggressive skating style] mounted on the strong plastic plate. Comes with a soft removable inner lining boot. Ventro’s are a popular skate boot for beginners to advanced skaters, especially those who love a street skate or two. Ventro is widely known for its hockey-style hard roller skate boots.

🚦Mid-Higher Price Range

Roces Pro 4 Roller Skates: Made up of very hard polyurethane designed for aggressive hockey-style roller skating. It has an anatomically [removable] padded inner memory foam boot. Mounted on a solid steel plate. Comes in black and chrome. These were my very first pair of skates way back in the very early 80’s. I loved them for their durability and comfort. They’ll most likely last well over a decade!

🚦Mid-Higher Price Range

Lastly, you can also buy good quality skates for younger children and toddlers that adjust in size as they grow. I bought my great nephew a pair of black and blue adjustable skates [although they do come in other colours] along with a set of kids protective gear - they were a great buy.

Don’t Forget Your Protective Gear

Beginners need to consider investing in a well-fitting protective gear set to limit the likelihood of injuries. It can make the difference between a minor wobble and a painful fall. Here’s what I recommend:

Helmet – Protect your head and your confidence. Preventing head injuries should be your priority, Wearing a securely fitted helmet will help reduce your fear of falling.

Wrist Guards – Essential for preventing sprains or breaks in a fall. Wrists/hands are usually the first point of contact when falling. They should also be prioritised.

Knee & Elbow Pads – Great for absorbing impacts and protecting joints. It’s pretty easy the fall forward onto one or both knees, or in an obscure way that impacts your elbows. Keeping them guarded from impact will raise your confidence as you try new skills.

Padded Shorts – Lightweight protection for your bum/tailbone and upper thighs [that won’t hinder your skating] is also a good optional extra. More than a few of my students attend their sessions wearing padded shorts - and they feel more confident as a result.

Wearing safety gear also gives you peace of mind, which can help you skate with more surety and ease so that you can have more fun.

Bags, Skate Straps, Tools & Portable Speakers: Add-Ons for Your Starter Kit

Once you’ve got your skates and pads sorted, think about how you’re going to carry and maintain your gear. Here are a few smart additions:

Skate Bags – Backpack or over-the-shoulder styles keep your gear organised and easy to carry. They allow you to place your roller skates in a separate compartment from your other items [to minimise exposure to dust and dirt]. You can also opt for triangular bags that hang over one shoulder, but they’re not so great if you need to carry the bag for long periods.

Travel Cases -They are a sturdy and efficient way to get your skates from point A to point b [just make sure that they have wheels] so you don’t have to lug them about. These are great for longer trips [so you can preserve your shoulders].

Skate Straps – Lightweight and portable, perfect for short walks between skate spots. These straps simply loop around the toe wheels of each skate [so you can hang them over your shoulder]. When not in use, just fold it into a small bundle and keep it in a pocket.

Hex Tool – A small multi-tool is perfect for adjusting your trucks, changing wheels, or tightening your toe stop on the go. Toss one into your bag and you’ll always be prepared.

JBL Extreme 3: I use this wireless mobile speaker for my jam skating sessions and street skates. It's a great quality speaker. However, JBL has a nice range of smaller [and lower priced] speakers for when you’re skating solo like the JBL Flip 7JBL Flip 6, and the pocket sized JBL Go 4 Ultra [which is tiny but mighty... my friend has one and loves it!]. As you can apreciate, music is a must when rhythm skating!

Final Thoughts: Put together Your Dream Kit at Your Own Pace

Getting started (or restarted after some decades) with roller skating is exciting—and a little daunting. But with Amazon’s roller skates and skating accessories, you can make your ideal set-up a reality [without breaking the bank].

Whether you’re testing the waters with a cheap and cheerful soft boot or investing in a higher end set-up, remember: there’s no “right” way to start—just your way.

So take your time, put something together that suits your aspirations and budget, and then go have yourself some fun!
